What: The Latin American take on a smoothie, licuados are thick, tasty beverages made of milk, fresh (or frozen) fruit, ice, and often sugar. Always made to order, they are very common throughout Mexico and LatAm in general (see also: jugos in Colombia).

Where: Our photo, of the fresa (strawberry) and sweet mamey “Kiki” licuado (15p), was taken inside Mexico City’s excellent Mercado Coyoacán (three blocks north of Jardín Hidalgo, at Calles Allende and Malintzin, map), at a very fast-paced stand called Cokteleando. Peek inside its madness here.

When: Cokteleando is open daily, 7am-5pm.

Alternatively: Licuados are easy to find all over the country, at many restaurants and cafes, jugerías that also sell aguas frescas, and even paleterías like the ubiquitous La Michoacana franchise. When in doubt, look for a string of blenders lined up at attention.
